'A performance indicator is a selection, or combination, of action variables that aims to define some aspects of a performance in a given sport and, these performance indicators, should relate to successful performance or outcome' (Clemente, F, 2012)
The key performance indicators in football vary from coach to coach as well as club to club. One manager may want to focus their analysis around a certain factor or player. For example a coach that has been with a club that has conceded lots of goals within a season may want to analyse defensive plays and areas on the pitch where the ball is being lost whereas a team not scoring very many goals may want to look at attacking principles. Some analysing that I have recently completed is that of a varsity match between Plymouth University and Marjon University in which we analysed forward runs and shots on and off targets for both teams as the results below show. This is Inter-observer reliability as explained by Mars; 'Rather than simply comparing frequency data, a different method of looking at reliability involves agreements and disagreements' (Van Der Mars, 1989). We didn't always agree with the results which is why we came up with a mode average. Intra-observer is different as O'Donoghue explains; 'Intra-observer reliability studies involve an operator analysing a performance on 2 or more occasions using the given performance analysis system' (O'Donoghue, 2007:38). Inter Observer reliability would seem more reliable because more than one person looks at the analysis however it depends on whether the mixed opinions are correct/
From the results we realised that Marjon University didn't have enough shots of make enough forward runs and therefore lost the game. This isn't the only reason but Plymouth University clearly had more opportunities. Tactically i would encourage Marjon University to have more shots on goal and be more positive on the ball. technically they could make better forward runs by being more technically aware of play and tactically making the correct runs at the right times
It is important that key point indicators are specific and relevant to the subject that needs to be improved upon as well as strengthening any weaknesses. A key point is often compared to an individual or team that is excelling in that area for example in the table below it shows that Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez were the two top goalscorers. Other teams will analyse these players and how the team plays and how they score so many goals. They will also use this as a way of working out how to defend against these teams.
